Ashley Cervantes is from Santa Ana, California and currently going into her senior year at Denison University. For the last three years she has been studying Portuguese. Project Favela really gave her the opportunity to immerse herself into Brazilian culture.
Jamie is 20 years old, from outside Los Angeles, California though she is originally from the east coast. Jamie is both a full-time Nursing student and part-time Nurse Staffing Coordinator. She came to us for 12 weeks in 2014 and helped re-vamp the children's English classes taught at Project Favela with her other fellow volunteers. She plans on returning to Rio as soon as she can, hopefully next time as a Registered Nurse.
Dhruv Toshniwal volunteered with Project Favela in Rocinha in May 2013 as an English teacher. Born and raised India, Dhruv loves to travel, play sports and learn languages. He graduated from the Wharton Business School and is currently working in microfinance in Mexico.
Eva was a volunteer from Belgium. She has a degree in tourism and a degree in event management. Since she finished her studies in June of 2014, she has been travelling around, staying in different places for different periods of time. Her goal in life is to live as many different experiences as possible. Doing volunteer work with underprivileged children was one of them.
Analis Ibarra is a San Francisco native and current student at Denison University where she will be graduating from in the spring of 2016. Throughout her time with Project Favela, Analis had the opportunity to experience first hand what it is like to be a teacher. As she reflects on her experiences, she says that "Teaching isn't about standing at the front of the class and talking at a group of students. Teaching is about putting yourself in your students' shoes and working on a given task together. You have to figure out what works, what doesn't work, and how you can make their day even better."
Ruth is a Belgian Law student specializing in Human Rights and International Law. In September 2014, she volunteered with Project Favela to teach English and Children's Rights. She is planning to come back to Rocinha as soon as possible!
Saira volunteered with Project Favela during the summer of 2013. She is a graduate of King's College in London.
Tracy was born and raised in Texas, in the USA. She is a graduate student at Princeton University working on a graduate degree in Civil/Structural Engineering.
