Taryn, a 25 year-old Canadian, is doing her first solo backpacking trip. She is visiting a number of countries in South America and was especially excited to explore Brazil. She recently completed a degree in Counselling Psychology and wanted to gain a better appreciation for the culture here in Rochina. Taryn has volunteered at hospitals, community mental health organizations, schools, and residential treatment programs within her own community. Project Favela is her volunteer experience abroad. Taryn is hoping to use her background in counselling in the classroom and in turn take what she learns here in the community and incorporate it into her practice back home.
Ellen serves as Project Favela's Volunteer Coordinator. She is a student at the University of Nottingham studying History with Hispanic studies. She has come to Project Favela for five months as part of her year abroad to improve her Portuguese. So far Ellen had absolutely loved working with the kids and has no doubt that she'll be so disappointed to leave.
Lucy is a Legal Application Support Analyst from London in the United Kingdom. She has been involved in a number of mentoring and pro-bono community investment projects through her employer where she works with children in local schools as a role model, helping them to build their confidence through reading and expressive writing.
Lucy made her first trip to South America in 2013 and fell in love with Rio. She has revisited twice since and wanted to give something back so she signed up to PF in the hope that she could help to make a difference
Amy is a 22 year old Brit, newly graduated in Linguistics and Hispanic Studies from the University of Sheffield. She has volunteered in a variety of projects previously from the age of 16. She is currently on her gap year and Project Favela Rio is the first destination of 10 countries. She wanted to take part in the project in order to utilise her degree in English linguistics, practise her Portuguese and more importantly give something back to the children of Rocinha.
Rocío Tabakman (better known as Chio) is a 23 years old working student from Asunción - Paraguay, that also loves sports and art (especially photography) and has been trying to capture the essence of the children in photographs. Through the years she has volunteered in different organizations. She is a member of Amnesty International an believes in the defense of human rights and that everyone has equals right, no matter the genre, orientation, color of their skin or circumstance of their lives. She found out about Project Favela thanks to a friend and wanted to come as soon as she got to know what the program did. Right now she's on her last semester of college and she'll have a degree in Communications and she hopes to apply the knowledge she has onto the program and help in whatever she can
Sara is Italian and graduated two years ago from Bocconi University with a Master of Science in Finance. She currently lives in Luxembourg, where she works in the financial sector. Sara came to Rio for the first time in 2012 as an exchange student at Fundacao Getulio Vargas, then came back to Rio for volunteering for a Brazilian NGO in 2013 and for Project Favela in 2015. Having the opportunity to live and volunteer inside the community of Rocinha has allowed her to get a deeper view of Brazilian life and culture. Sara can’t wait to go back to Rio for her next volunteering experience, she believes giving back to the community should be a significant part of our lives, no matter how small our contribution is.
Scott is a 22 year old graduate of sport and leisure studies. After finishing university he set off travelling and has been gone for 10 months now, with Rio being his last stop. He choose the project to combine his passion for sport, and eagerness to work with children. He is a big believer in providing a better future for kids by providing opportunity to participate in sport, which is why he choose the football coaching programme in Rio.
Phil is a 18 year old German who recently graduated from the Gymnasium Isny. Before going to University in 2016 he is spending 6 months in Brazil to travel and to volunteer at Project Favela with the aim to get to know a fascinating culture with great people.
Born on Merseyside, Joe is a recent graduate from the University of Nottingham, where he studied Portuguese and International Media Communications. Captivated from an early age by the alluring intrigue of Brazilian culture, travelling to Rio de Janeiro is the fulfilment of a lifelong dream. At Project Favela, Joe hopes he will gain a deeper understanding of some of the social issues within Brazil, while also working alongside the local community.
Bria is a 20 year old student from Leicester, England. She came to Brazil because she has a passion for experiencing new things and wanted to make a difference here in Rocinha. Project favela is her first volunteer project she's took part in and has encouraged her to want to volunteer for other NGOs in the near future
Leah is a graduate from Southampton, United Kingdom. She aspires to become teacher and Project Favela provided her with her first real teaching experience. Here in Rocinha she led English classes for both children and adults, gaining invaluable experience.
